Message on a lamppost:
"Rest in peace; you're sorely missed"
A tribute to a teenage boy
Dead long before his time
Pity the family, pity the friends
Who can't hear his voice
Or his laughter, his tears
To die so young,
To live so little,
There's no glamour in this
Pain for those he left behind
Pain for those who mourn
Pain for those who write the messages
On the lampposts, on the walls.

Author's Comments

A boy in my school died in a car accident over the weekend. Since then, posters and graffiti have sprung up everywhere with his name on, which is mostly what prompted me to write this.

I didn't know Liam personally, but my younger sister was quite close to him, so please, be gentle with the critiques. I didn't write this poem because I wanted a piece for people to look at and critique; I wrote it for Liam's family and friends - please bear this in mind.

Why do we laugh,
While others cry,
And hang their heads,
And wish to die?
