Tiny arm with tiny hand
Timidly stretches, reaches, grasps
Doctor’s finger, holds on fast.
Tiny head opens tiny mouth
Laughs a tiny, gurgling laugh
As tiny eyes spot warming gaze
From parents’ tired, tearstained eyes.
Those eyes that watch the time tick by as
Tiny baby fights for life
Screened behind tiny plastic incubator
Attached to not-so tiny equipment.
And tiny baby laughs again
Laughs his last
Breathes his last.
Buried in a tiny grave
With a tiny headstone
Commemorating his tiny life.

A couple of years ago my mum's cousin gave birth to conjoined twins, who died a few hours after they were born. It's one of those experiences you can never forget. The poem isn't based on that particular experience, but it is built on the emotions parents (and other members of the family) go through when a newborn child passes away.

Why do we laugh,
While others cry,
And hang their heads,
And wish to die?

Thanks :) Was a bit worried about people commenting on it, but if people are sensitive then it's ok. It's really close to my heart at the moment... It never meant so much to me at the time because we were in the middle of moving andwe had our own stress, but now, looking back, it was so terrible. Things like that shouldn't happen to any mother.
